☀️ FilterFirst
Posted by Ratna Ghosh
Tagline: Find your sunscreen by science, not marketing.
What it is:
FilterFirst is a sunscreen discovery engine built specifically for South Asian skin — searchable by UV filter technology, PA rating, finish, and budget, with community reviews from people who actually live in high-UV, high-humidity climates.
The problem:
Most sunscreen recommendation platforms are Western-centric. They don't account for Indian UV index realities, monsoon humidity, darker skin tones, or the new-generation filter landscape (Tinosorb S/M, Uvinul A Plus, Mexoryl SX) that dominates Asian and European markets but isn't on most people's radar.
What we're building:
- Searchable ingredient + filter database (INCI-verified)
- Community review layer filtered by skin type, tone, and climate zone
- Brand transparency scores based on filter quality, photostability data, and honest SPF claims
- "Build your routine" tool pairing sunscreen with actives (retinoids, AHAs, Vitamin C)
Who it's for:
Skincare-aware consumers across India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, and the South Asian diaspora globally.
Looking for: Dermatology advisors, frontend developer, skincare community moderators, early users

Appraisal score
FilterFirst addresses a clear gap in the market for South Asian skincare consumers, offering a tailored approach to sunscreen selection. While the concept of a searchable database is not entirely new, its specific focus on advanced filters, climate, and skin tone for this demographic provides a significant improvement over existing Western-centric platforms. The success hinges on robust data verification and community engagement.
